The Most Frequently Asked Bible Questions:WHY DOES GOD ALLOW SUFFERING?
This is one of the most honest questions a human being can ask.
God allows suffering because He created a real world with real freedom. Love that is forced is not love. Obedience without choice is not righteousness. A world with genuine freedom will also have real consequences, and much suffering enters through human sin, injustice, violence, and broken decisions. God does not erase freedom by removing every consequence.
The Bible also teaches that creation itself is fallen. Death, disease, decay, and pain were not God’s original design. They are symptoms of a world fractured by sin. Scripture says creation is groaning, waiting to be restored. This brokenness is real, but it is not permanent.
God uses suffering to shape what comfort never could. Pain exposes pride, strips away illusions, deepens faith, and teaches dependence on Him. Suffering itself is not good, but God is powerful enough to redeem it. What was meant for destruction, He often turns into refinement.
And this is where joy enters.
Biblical joy is not denial of pain. It is confidence in God’s faithfulness in the middle of it. Joy flows from knowing suffering is not meaningless, not wasted, and not eternal. Joy rests in the certainty that God is at work even when circumstances scream otherwise.
Most importantly, God is not distant from suffering. He entered it. Jesus was rejected, betrayed, beaten, mocked, and crucified. God does not explain suffering from a throne far away. He steps into it with us. The cross proves God cares. The resurrection proves suffering does not win.
Suffering is real, but it is temporary. Joy is rooted in what lasts forever. God allows pain for a season, but He promises restoration without end. Every tear will be answered. Every injustice will be addressed. Nothing endured in faith is wasted.
God is not cruel. God is not absent. God is not finished.
And joy is coming.
