“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

  • Revelation 3:15–16

These are some of the strongest words Jesus ever spoke to believers. They were not directed toward atheists. They were not spoken to pagans. They were spoken to a church.

The church of Laodicea represents a spiritual condition that still exists today. Lukewarm faith is not open rebellion against God. It is something far more subtle and far more dangerous. It is the illusion of closeness to God without true surrender to Him.

To understand the warning, we need to understand the word lukewarm. In Greek, the word is chliaros, which means tepid, moderately warm, or spiritually indifferent. It describes something that has lost intensity, usefulness, and effectiveness.

Laodicea sat between two cities known for their water supply. Hierapolis had hot mineral springs used for healing. Colossae had cold mountain water known for refreshment. Laodicea’s water arrived through aqueducts and became lukewarm by the time it reached the city. It was unpleasant and undrinkable. The believers in Laodicea would have immediately understood this picture. Jesus was saying their spiritual condition had become useless and spiritually nauseating.

Cold, in this context, does not mean spiritually dead or anti-God. Cold water refreshes. Hot water heals and cleanses. Both serve a purpose. Lukewarm water serves neither. The issue is not temperature alone. The issue is usefulness and authenticity.

Lukewarm Christianity often looks like this:

Claiming faith but living unchanged. Knowing Scripture but refusing obedience. Attending church but avoiding surrender. Praying occasionally but trusting self constantly. Wanting salvation benefits without Lordship submission.

The Laodicean church believed they were spiritually rich. Jesus exposes their true condition.

Revelation 3:17 says, “You say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ - and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.”

This is the deception of lukewarm faith. It feels safe. It feels stable. It feels religious enough to quiet conviction, but not surrendered enough to transform a life. Lukewarm faith produces comfort without conviction, activity without intimacy, and religion without relationship.

Jesus does not respond with rejection first. He responds with invitation.

Revelation 3:19 says, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.”

The word zealous comes from the Greek zeloo, meaning to burn with passion or intensity. Jesus is calling believers back to spiritual fire, not casual belief. He is calling for repentance, which comes from the Greek word metanoia, meaning a change of mind that results in a change of direction.

Then comes one of the most tender invitations in Scripture.

Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

This verse is often used for evangelism, but in context, Jesus is speaking to believers who have pushed Him outside of daily fellowship. Lukewarm faith often keeps Jesus in theology while excluding Him from daily authority, decisions, priorities, and devotion.

Lukewarm Christianity is comfortable with Jesus as Savior but resists Jesus as Lord.

True biblical faith produces transformation. It produces conviction, growth, hunger for God, and a desire to obey Him. It does not mean perfection. It means direction. It means the heart burns for Christ even while still learning and growing.

The warning to Laodicea is not meant to produce fear for genuine believers. It is meant to expose spiritual complacency before it hardens into complete indifference.

The solution is simple but costly. Return to intimacy with Christ. Return to dependence on Him. Return to wholehearted surrender.

Jesus does not ask for partial devotion. He calls for a heart fully yielded to Him.

The question every believer must honestly ask is not, “Do I believe in Jesus?” The deeper question is, “Is Jesus truly Lord of my life?”
