Before Moses ever stood before Pharaoh… Before the Red Sea ever parted… Before the Law was ever written…
There was a mother who chose faith over fear.
Her name was Jochebed.
Jochebed lived during one of the darkest periods in Israel’s history. The Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, and Pharaoh had issued a brutal command. Every Hebrew baby boy was to be killed at birth in order to control the growing population of Israel.
But Jochebed refused to surrender her child to death.
Exodus 2 tells us she hid her son for three months. Imagine the pressure. Every cry risked discovery. Every knock on the door could mean execution. Yet she trusted God more than she feared Pharaoh.
When she could no longer hide him safely, she did something extraordinary. She built a small waterproof basket and placed her baby inside it, setting him among the reeds of the Nile River.
This was not abandonment. This was surrender to God’s protection.
The Hebrew word used for the basket is “tevah,” the same word used for Noah’s Ark. Just as God preserved humanity through an ark floating on judgment waters, He preserved Israel’s future deliverer through a small ark floating on the Nile.
God’s providence immediately unfolded.
Pharaoh’s own daughter discovered the child. Instead of ordering his death, she had compassion and chose to adopt him. In one of Scripture’s most beautiful ironies, Jochebed was then hired to nurse and raise her own son inside Pharaoh’s protection.
The child she protected would grow up to become Moses, the man God used to confront Pharaoh, deliver Israel from slavery, part the Red Sea, and receive the Law on Mount Sinai.
Jochebed was also the mother of Miriam, who would become a prophetess, and Aaron, who would become Israel’s first High Priest. Her faith shaped an entire generation of spiritual leadership.
Hebrews 11:23 later honors this moment, saying Moses’ parents hid him by faith and were not afraid of the king’s command.
Jochebed reminds us that God often moves history through quiet acts of obedience that the world never sees. Her story proves that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is trusting God enough to obey Him anyway.
