Jesus gave one of His most powerful teachings using one of the smallest objects His audience could hold in their hand.
In Matthew 17:20 Jesus said, “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed… nothing shall be impossible unto you.”
Most people misunderstand this statement. Jesus was not saying we need giant, heroic, mountain-sized faith. He was teaching the exact opposite. He was teaching that even the smallest amount of real faith can release the power of God.
A mustard seed was known in Jewish culture as a symbol of something extremely small. You could barely hold it between your fingers. Yet that tiny seed grows into a large plant that towers over garden herbs and produces wide branches. Jesus used this picture to explain how faith works in the Kingdom of God.
Faith is not about size. Faith is about direction.
The Greek word Jesus used for faith is “pistis.” It means trust, reliance, and confidence. Biblical faith is not wishful thinking or positive vibes. It is choosing to place your full trust in the character, authority, and promises of God.
The disciples once asked Jesus to increase their faith. They assumed faith worked like strength training. They thought they needed more of it before they could obey. Jesus corrected them by saying if they had faith like a mustard seed, they could command a tree to be uprooted and planted in the sea.
Jesus was revealing something deeper. God does not require impressive faith. God requires genuine faith.
Faith grows when it is planted, not when it is admired. A seed that stays in your hand never grows. A seed must be placed into the soil where it disappears before it multiplies. In the same way, faith often begins in surrender. It starts when a believer steps forward in obedience even when the outcome is uncertain.
Scripture teaches that faith grows through hearing the Word of God, through prayer, through obedience, and through walking with God in difficult seasons. Real faith is usually born in moments where human strength runs out.
The Bible consistently shows God working through small beginnings. David faced Goliath with a sling. Gideon defeated an army after God reduced his forces. A widow’s small offering was praised by Jesus above the wealthy. Five loaves and two fish fed thousands when placed in Christ’s hands. God repeatedly shows that His power is revealed when people trust Him instead of themselves.
When Jesus spoke about moving mountains, He was using a phrase familiar to Jewish teaching. Mountains symbolized overwhelming obstacles, spiritual opposition, impossible situations, and barriers that no human strength could overcome. Jesus was teaching that authentic faith connects believers to the unlimited power of God, who specializes in what humanity calls impossible.
The Old Testament word connected to faith is “emunah.” It comes from a root word meaning firmness, reliability, and stability. It is the same root that produces the word “Amen,” meaning it is established and trustworthy. Faith is standing firmly on who God has proven Himself to be.
Mustard seed faith teaches a powerful Kingdom principle. Small surrender placed in God’s hands produces massive spiritual impact.
You do not need perfect faith to begin walking with God. You need honest faith. You do not need to wait until fear disappears. You need to trust God enough to take the next step He places in front of you.
Faith does not grow by waiting for confidence. Faith grows by choosing obedience.
The question is not whether your faith feels big. The question is whether your faith is placed in a big God.
