GreekHYDOR: THE GREEK WORD FOR WATER
(WHY ONE SIMPLE WORD CARRIES MASSIVE THEOLOGY)
The Greek word for water is ὕδωρ (hydōr). Strong’s G5204. It simply means water. From it we get English words like hydro, hydraulic, hydrology, and hydrogen.
But in Scripture, ὕδωρ is never just H2O.
In John 2:7, Jesus turns ὕδωρ into wine. Literal water. Physical. Real. No symbolism there. But as you move through the New Testament, the word begins to expand.
In Ephesians 5:26, Paul writes that Christ cleanses the church “with the washing of water by the word.” The phrase is λουτρῷ τοῦ ὕδατος. Water is connected to purification. Not external washing only, but inner cleansing through truth. The Word of God washes what the world contaminates.
Then Jesus raises the meaning even higher.
In John 4:14 He says, “The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” The Greek says πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου - a spring of water leaping up. This is not stagnant religion. This is active, living life sourced in Him.
In John 7:38-39 Jesus says, “Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John clarifies that He was speaking about the Spirit. The phrase ὕδατος ζῶντος means living, flowing water. Moving water. Life-giving water. The Holy Spirit is not static. He flows.
Even in John 3:5, when Jesus says a man must be born “of water and of the Spirit,” the Greek reads γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ πνεύματος. Water and Spirit together echo Ezekiel 36:25-27 where God promises to sprinkle clean water and give a new spirit. Cleansing and regeneration. Inner renewal.
Water in Scripture represents life. Cleansing. The Word. The Spirit. Eternal life. But it can also represent judgment. The Flood. The Red Sea. The same element that saves can also judge.
From Genesis to Revelation, water frames redemption history. God separates waters in Genesis 1. Christ walks on water in the Gospels. Revelation ends with the river of the water of life flowing from the throne.
Ὕδωρ has no shape of its own. It fills what it enters.
So the real question is not what water means.
The real question is this.
Are you stagnant water or living water?
Because biblically, living water flows.
