Expound - Exploratory Studies“Depart from Me, I never knew you.”
- Matthew 7:23
Those may be the most terrifying words Jesus ever spoke.
Not because they were said to atheists. Not because they were said to people who rejected God.
They were said to people who called Him Lord.
They preached. They ministered. They did works in His name. From the outside, they looked legitimate. Powerful, even. But Jesus didn’t say, “You didn’t do enough.” He said, “I never knew you.”
That word knew is not about information. It’s about relationship. Submission. Obedience. Walking with Him, not just working for Him.
They wanted His authority without His lordship. They wanted His name without His will. They wanted power without repentance.
And Jesus exposes the root issue plainly: “You workers of lawlessness.”
Not a lack of activity. A lack of surrender.
This passage isn’t meant to scare true believers. It’s meant to wake up those resting in religion instead of Christ. Knowing verses isn’t the same as knowing Jesus. Serving in ministry isn’t the same as following Him. Saying “Lord, Lord” means nothing if He is not actually obeyed.
Jesus doesn’t say, “I knew you once.” He says, “I never knew you.”
That’s the difference between religion and redemption. Between using Jesus’ name and belonging to Him.
