Expound - Exploratory Studies“WHERE IS THE PROMISE OF HIS COMING?”

(A Short Study on Mockers and Scoffers in the Last Days)

The Bible warned that one of the clearest attitudes of the last days would be mocking the return of Christ.

Peter wrote plainly:

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” 2 Peter 3:3–4

Their argument is simple.

Nothing has changed. Everything continues as it always has.

So they conclude the promise of Christ’s return must not be real.

But Peter says this thinking is intentional blindness.

“For this they willingly are ignorant…” 2 Peter 3:5

They ignore that God has already intervened in history.

Creation proves He can create the world. The Flood proves He can judge it.

“Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.” 2 Peter 3:6

Peter then explains why the return of Christ has not happened yet.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering… not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

The delay is not failure.

It is mercy.

God is giving people time to repent.

But Scripture is clear. The day will come.

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.” 2 Peter 3:10

Jude gives the same warning.

“There should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.” Jude 18

Paul also warned Timothy that the last days would be marked by a rejection of truth.

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” 2 Timothy 4:3

Jesus Himself said this attitude would resemble the days before the Flood.

“But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matthew 24:37

In Noah’s day people ignored the warnings until judgment suddenly came.

Jesus warned the same thing would happen again.

“And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matthew 24:39

The prophets also spoke about this spirit of mockery.

“Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish.” Acts 13:41

Isaiah warned of those who would mock God’s warnings.

“Which say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it.” Isaiah 5:19

In other words: “If judgment is coming, let’s see it.”

But Scripture says the promise still stands.

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” Titus 2:13

Christ will return.

And ironically, the Bible says the presence of scoffers is itself part of the prophecy.

The question will not last forever.

One day the King will stand on the earth.

And the mockery will stop.
