Bible StudiesFREE WILL:
People argue about it constantly. Some say man is completely sovereign over his choices. Others say God determines everything and human choice is an illusion. Scripture does not flatten either side. It holds both together.
From the beginning, choice is real. In Genesis, God commanded Adam not to eat from the tree. A command only makes sense if disobedience is possible. Love only means something if it can be rejected. The tree was not a trap. It was the opportunity for trust. Humanity chose autonomy instead of obedience, and that decision fractured the human condition.
After the fall, the will still exists, but it is bent. Romans 3 says none are righteous. Ephesians 2 says we are dead in trespasses and sins. Dead does not mean nonexistent. It means spiritually incapable apart from divine intervention. The will is active, but it is inclined away from God.
This is where grace enters.
Jesus said in John 6:44, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him.” The word “draw” is the Greek helkō, meaning to pull or drag with force. Salvation begins with God’s initiative. He awakens. He convicts. He reveals.
But Scripture also says in Revelation 22:17, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” The word “will” comes from the Greek thelō, meaning to desire or choose. The invitation is universal. The response is personal.
So which is it? Sovereignty or free will?
Both.
God initiates. Man responds. Grace enables. The will chooses. You are not saved because you are smarter than someone else. You are not forced into the kingdom against your will. God draws, and you either resist or surrender.
The debate becomes philosophical when it should be practical. The real question is not whether free will exists in theory. The real question is what you are doing with the light you have been given.
When truth confronts you, do you humble yourself or harden yourself?
Pharaoh hardened his heart, and God hardened it further. Judas chose betrayal, and prophecy was fulfilled. Human responsibility and divine sovereignty are not enemies. They operate together under the authority of God.
