People Of The BiblePriscilla and Aquila:

(A Powerful Husband and Wife Ministry Team)

Priscilla and Aquila are one of the most powerful ministry couples in the New Testament. Their story is short in Scripture, but the impact they had on the early church was enormous.

They appear several times in the book of Acts and in Paul’s letters, and every time we see them they are serving, teaching, discipling, and helping advance the Gospel.

Acts 18:2-3 introduces them when Paul arrives in Corinth.

“A certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.”

Aquila was originally from Pontus, but he and Priscilla had been living in Rome. Around AD 49 the Roman emperor Claudius expelled the Jews from Rome, forcing them to relocate. They ended up in Corinth where they met the apostle Paul.

What looked like a political disruption was actually God positioning them exactly where they needed to be.

Paul stayed with them because they shared the same trade. They were tentmakers. Paul often supported himself through work while preaching the Gospel.

The early church was full of believers like this. People who worked normal jobs but whose lives were centered around Christ.

Their home likely became both a workshop and a ministry hub.

Later they traveled with Paul.

Acts 18:18 says Paul left Corinth and sailed toward Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila went with him. They eventually settled in Ephesus where they helped strengthen the church.

One of the most fascinating moments in their story involves a man named Apollos.

Acts 18:24-26 tells us that Apollos was an eloquent speaker and mighty in the Scriptures. He taught boldly in the synagogue, but his understanding was incomplete. He only knew the baptism of John.

When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they did something wise.

They did not publicly embarrass him. They took him aside privately.

Scripture says they “expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”

They discipled him.

After this, Apollos became one of the most powerful teachers in the early church and greatly strengthened believers.

This quiet moment of discipleship had massive ripple effects.

Priscilla and Aquila also opened their home for the church.

Romans 16:3-5 says:

“Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Who have for my life laid down their own necks… Likewise greet the church that is in their house.”

Before church buildings existed, believers met in homes. Their house became a gathering place for Christians and a center for teaching and fellowship.

Paul calls them his “helpers in Christ Jesus.” The Greek word used is συνεργός (synergos), meaning fellow workers or co-laborers in the mission.

That is high praise from the apostle Paul.

Another interesting detail appears in several passages where Priscilla’s name is mentioned before Aquila’s. In ancient writings this sometimes indicated prominence or respect. It suggests she was highly regarded in the early church.

Together this couple worked, traveled, discipled believers, hosted churches, and even risked their lives for the Gospel.

Their story reminds us that some of the most influential servants of God were not apostles or famous preachers.

They were faithful believers who simply opened their home, used their skills, and invested in others.

Most Christians will never preach to thousands.

But anyone can live like Priscilla and Aquila.

Work faithfully. Serve Christ together. Open your home. Disciple others. Strengthen the church.

And through those simple acts, God can use an ordinary life to make an extraordinary impact.
